Types Of Reference Electrodes

EHZ-Center offers several types of copper-sulphate reference electrodes. These devices measure the soil - construction potential difference. Reference electrodes are used to control the quality of protection with the method of cathodic polarization.

Portable Reference Electrode

Since the portable reference electrodes EMS-1,2 / EMS-0,4 / EMS-VE are mobile, they can be used in the fields to do measurements in sequence in different points. The electrodes have several configurations:width="250"
  • EMS-1,2 with the height of 1,140/1,160 mm is used for intensive measurements;
  • EMS-0,4 with the height of 390 /410 mm is permanently installed;
  • EMS-VE is manufactured with an additional back-up circular line electrode.
EMS electrodes are maintained in accordance with the recommendations stated in the datasheet:
  • the rod should be thoroughly cleaned from impurities and with distilled water;
  • prepare copper sulphate solution in accordance with the instruction and leave the electrode in this solution in 24 hours prior the day of measurements;
  • connect the unit to a measured object in accordance with the diagram shown in the datasheet.
Important: please read the instruction and safety rules prior electrode start-up.

Stationary Reference Electrode:

Stationary electrodes (SMES) are manufactured in the following configurations:
  • A single-unit electrode SMES-1 and SMES-1VE with an additional circular line electrode;
  • A two-unit electrodes SMES-2 and SMES-2VE are used to carry out the measurements in dry regions.
Stable values of their own potential allow one to use the electrodes for extremely accurate measurements of potential differences. СМЭС SMES electrodes are mounted with a special measuring cable which should be on the surface and be connected with the measurement devices. The electrodes should be installed in accordance with the instructions given in the datasheet.
  • It is necessary to keep the electrode in a distilled water for at least 2 days before it is mounted.
  • The electrode is vertically installed at the level of the lower part of the pipeline and at the distance of 100 mm from the pipeline side.
  • The reference electrode is buried into local soil with no large and solid particles.

Two-chamber reference electrode ЭНЕС-3М

This electrode is completely water tight and has two chambers: electrolytic and bentonite ones. Bentonite gel gives stability to electrolyte potential due to its complete insulation: no electrolyte is 100% sure to penetrate the soil, and no soil moisture gets into electrolyte. The electrode can operate independently or together with cathodic protection stations. It is mounted and maintained similar to SMES electrodes: at the distance of 100 mm from the measured object. Measuring cables run to a test station or a cathodic protection station. Prior reference electrode installation, please read the maintenance and safety guidelines which are given in detail in the datasheet.
