ENES-1 / Reference Electrodes ENES-1

Stationary Reference Electrode ENES-1 is used to define the degree of electrochemical protection for underground metallic structures. Electrolyte is poured inside a water tight cylindrical body of the device. An ion-exchange membrane, copper rod are also imbeded into the Electrode ENES-1, a potential sensor is mounted on its body. The device is connected to a Test Station (KIP) with two cable tails.

Operating Principle

For stationary types the device is vertically mounted at 10 cm from the controlled construction in the soil at the depth of 0.8 – 3 m. A single-unit Reference Electrode ENES contacts the soil electrolytically through a potential sensor. To define the efficiency of anti-corrosion protection of underground metal structure, the device finds the difference between its potential and a polarized potential. Measurements in ENES-1 are based on oxidation-reduction reaction resulting in electrolytic contact between the rod and soil. This gives rise to the difference between an unchanged potential of the electrode and a changing potential of the soil. A voltage meter 3-0-3 V with a measurement scale with zero in the middle and with large input resistance (20 kОm/v and more) measures this potential difference. If a voltage meter shows the value which is lower than potential difference norm between copper and electrolyte (copper sulphate), then the protection is violated. Beside a voltage meter, the measurements are made by a polarization circuit breaker and a sensor.
